Turkey Makes You Sleepy = Myth

http://physorg.com/news8453.html

There's reportedly good Thanksgiving news for turkey lovers: Contrary to popular belief, tryptophan in turkey doesn't cause drowsiness.

In fact, scientists told National Geographic News the substance could possibly aid in the treatment of depression and multiple sclerosis.

Purified tryptophan is a mild sleep-inducing agent and that probably led to the idea that foods containing heavy doses of the chemical cause drowsiness.

But tryptophan can't function well as part of a meal.

"Tryptophan is taken to the brain by an active transport system shared by a number of other amino acids and there's competition among them -- like a crowd of people trying to get through a revolving door," Simon Young, a neurochemist at McGill University in Montreal, Canada, told National Geographic News.

He said consuming tryptophan-rich foods may cause blood levels of the amino acid to rise, but not enough tryptophan will reach one's brain to have a sedative affect.

And, scientists told NGN, turkey isn't even unusually high in tryptophan. Many other foods, such as beef or soybeans, have higher concentrations.

Discover

The nice thing about living in the 00's, is that you get to look past the mediocre 90s and the terrible 80s and just be amazed at the quality of the music that came out in the 70s. Pink Floyd is a good example of one of those bands.

I keep telling Tessa, "I honestly think we are living in a golden age of music, it's just no one realizes it". And I'm not talking about any of the stuff you hear on the radio and 80% of worship releases, that is music made for the consumer machine. There is *alot* of bands that are post-punk post-emo post-ska post-pop (i'm sure i could throw more post-'s and maybe a few alt-'s, but i'll stop) that may have matured to the level of genius. I really hope it's the 70s all over again. And I really hope I can bring these new sounds to the worship service. Cause as is normal (but not natural), worship music is about 2-5 years behind mainstream.

We're the ones who should be innovating, but we're all scared. We're the ones with the most brilliant creative genius in existence driving our creative process. And still we copy the counterfit. Brutal.

Woot!

So, if you haven't heard of it, woot.com is a site that offers a daily deal for US customers only. But I still check it daily beacuse I'm either weird, or just like seeing the incredible deals that I COULD be getting if I lived right beside the border. Today they are selling their "bag of crap" which is basically a mystery bag with mystery items that is dirt cheap. So that's kind of fun.
